Faith in the Fire

I love the beauty in nature. A lovely sunset. An amazing sunrise. Watching the moon at the beach and seeing how it appears to be making a light path towards it. I also like the beauty of fire. Don’t get me wrong I am not an arsonist but there is a beauty in fire. The different colours and the majestic move of the fire. As much as I love the way it looks, I prefer to stay way clear of it. No one wants to be in the fire, but it can be used to destroy and consume things which are dangerous to us. I have seen it used to burn documents that would otherwise harm us. I have seen it used to chase snakes out of an area. I have seen it used to destroy trash.

This year has been that year where we all were thrown into the fire. No one was prepared for this, but here we are in it. The thing our pastors have been saying throughout the year about faith has come to be tested. Let us see you Christians, so called sons of God have the faith you claim to have. A fire that is closing in from all sides. All the things we have been taught about faith in God is being tested and the devil is asking all the right questions did God really say.

This reminds me of the story of Shadrack, Meshach and Abednego. The King at the time was the most powerful man in the world. His name was King Nebuchadnezzar II, King of Babylon. He set up a golden image and commanded that all his officials bow down before it, failure to which they be thrown into the fire. A fire so strong that it not only fully consumed what was being thrown into it but also burned those who were nearby.

It suffices to say that this king was the most feared man in the world at the time. In the book of Esther, it says that when one entered the king’s presence without being summoned would mean certain death if he did not approve. The power of kings was almost likened to small gods. The officials of King Nebuchadnezzar came to report three men who had refused to bow to this golden image. Even how the addressed the king when they went to meet him showed reverence.

They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “May the king live forever! Your majesty has issued a decree that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, hard, pipe, and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the image of gold, and whoever does not fall and worship will be thrown into a blazing furnace. But there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon-Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego- who pay no attention to you, Your majesty. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up.” The king was furious and ordered that the men be brought to him. When they came, listen to how they addressed the king. It almost seemed as though they had lost their minds because of the arrogant way they addressed the king.

How I admire such convictions of faith that they had. They knew they were facing certain death yet even the manner at which they spoke to the king was utterly rude and nonchalant. In the NKJV version this is how they spoke to the king when confronted with this accusation. “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the golden image that you have set up. “First of all, they addressed him by his name and then go on to say they have no need to answer him in the matter. Either they had gone mad or whatever was used to light the fire was affecting their senses.

The three men in this story show bravery that we cannot fathom especially in the face of death. Only the Holy Spirit can give this. The men were thrown into the fire but there was another in the fire with them. This year we are in the fire but make no mistake, there is another in the fire with us. The bible says they made a decision to step out of the fire and not only were they not harmed in the fire, but they did not even smell like smoke. This year may you make a decision to step out of that fire and see the salvation of the Lord upon your life. I believe that the Holy Spirit gives you strength to face whatever fire you are facing right now. May your faith stand to know that there is another in the fire with you.

God bless you.
